Attention LTL Shippers,

The National Motor Freight Classification (NMFC) has been updated with changes impacting LTL shippers. Changes are classified under Supplement 4 and will go into effect on December 29, 2018.

You can review the entire updated NMFC here, but for your convenience, we've listed the changes that are likeliest to affect most LTL shippers below:

Subject 1: Boot Group - Item 28160. Changing to a two-tier density break.

  • Sub 1: Less than 6 PCF= Class 200
  • Sub 2: 6 PCF or greater= Class 125

Subject 2: Machinery - Item 123550. Changing to a three-tier density break.

  • Sub 1: Less than 6 PCF= Class 250
  • Sub 2: 6 PCF but less than 10 PCF= Class 150
  • Sub 3: 10 PCF or greater= Class 92.5

Subject 8: Electrical Equipment - Item 61900= Cancelled. Item 61910 created to include exhaust and ventilating fans with a two-tier density break.

  • Sub 1: Less than 6 PCF= Class 200
  • Sub 2: 6 PCF or greater= Class 110

The misclassification of freight is one of the most common ways shippers waste money on transportation. Understand NMFC to minimize loss.
