An early Roadcheck last week didn’t exactly help matters. What it did do for shippers was reinforce the extreme importance of education in this everchanging marketplace, something the Evans team meets head-on every day, as they continue to work with clients to find the best path to keep them moving forward.

May started with the International Roadcheck, where capacity was tight, and the month ends with a holiday in which capacity will again be tight. So Evans wants you to start planning now to ensure there are no disruptions in your supply chain. 

Why is May different this year?

• Roadcheck happened earlier.
• Truckload capacity is already tight.
• This is one of the busiest times of the year.

Driver availability repercussions

Because the CVSA focus is on the most common violations, and drivers typically lay low waiting for it to pass over, we believe that driver availability will be recorded at an all-time low after we already hit an all-time low in March!

Now, add in constrained Class 8 truck production and ramifications from the FMCSA Drug & Alcohol Clearinghouse, the number of drivers on the road is heading in the wrong direction. We firmly believe this will have a delayed effect on some other stats. For instance, low driver availability layered in with Roadcheck week could be troublesome for finding a truck during the current month.

All of that said, spot market volume and rates set yet another record recently, and TL volume was 435% higher than this point last year!
