Walking in the Customer’s Shoes

The Evans Team

Derek and Willard, on Cane River Lake Natchitoches, LA.

Meet Derek Wooten, Vice President of Key Accounts at Evans. We sat down with him and got to know him a bit, talking about his personal life and what Evans is all about.

So, what’s your background?

I’m originally from the Dallas area, went to school in Austin and I’ve been in Texas my whole life. I got married in 2019, and my wife is from Louisiana. She thinks she may be able to convince me to move there someday but I doubt that’ll ever happen. I like to visit Louisiana, though!

What attracted you to Evans?

The family first attitude at Evans was attractive to me. Work can be fun. It’s enjoyable to go to work every day where everyone is encouraging, and at Evans, it’s the idea of being somewhere where you’re not just doing a job together, but you’re also doing life together.

How does a company that’s nearly 40 years old make the ‘Inc. 5000’s Fastest Growing Companies’ list?

We’ve made the right investments in both people and technology, which has enabled us to grow. A big part of that -and I know it may sound cheesy- is that our people on the front lines who deal with customers bring more experience to those situations, which definitely leads to a better overall customer experience. In my mind that creates growth.

What kind of sales approach do you bring to the workplace every day?

I think what really sets Evans apart, and what I try to get across, is that we’ll create a tailored logistics or transportation solution for any opportunity. We like to get creative and walk in our customers’ shoes however we can to understand their pain points, and then develop technology or process solutions for freight programs that make their lives easier. That’s what we’re here for. We’re not only a service provider but we’re here to make their job easier.

What are customers looking for in Evans?

Customers are looking for a logistics partner that sticks to their commitments, and that’s something I appreciate that we do. When we offer our services in our agreement we stick to our agreement and we always do the right thing. They’re looking for problem solvers that can give them the extra attention to certain parts of their supply chain. Our expertise brings a lot of solutions to those needs.

When you hear ‘consistency and Evans’, what does that make you think of?

To me, that means a consistent, positive customer experience. We have a team in place to support every account, and there won’t be a day that passes where your dedicated account manager or sales lead is not available to you. We provide that positive customer experience on a day-to-day basis.

Tidbits about Derek:

  • Evans status: started working here in the spring of 2020
  • Career status: has been in the logistics industry for nearly 10 years
  • Sports status: Dallas Stars and Dallas Maverick’s season ticket holder
  • Bingeing status: Game of Thrones fan
  • Tunes status: loves Texas country music, especially Whiskey Meyers

Thanks to Derek for spending time with us, and good luck on that future move to Louisiana!
